Understanding Matagorda County Releases
A person becomes a released Matagorda County inmate when the jail completes an authorized exit from its custody. That exit may return the person to the community, or it may deliver the person to another agency. The distinction matters. Bond, time served, completion of a county sentence, or a court-directed release can end confinement. A transfer to TDCJ, another county, federal custody, or immigration custody closes the local booking but does not mean the person is free.
Matagorda County Jail is the county's certified adult detention facility. Bay City and Palacios police may make arrests, but neither was confirmed as a separate long-term adult jail. A person booked after a local arrest will usually be traced through the county's Public Records gateway. Once the active roster no longer shows a name, the booking-out record, court file, and any receiving agency record become the key sources.
Matagorda County Release Types
The release reason controls what to check next. A bond is conditional pretrial release, not a dismissal. Time served can reflect a completed sentence or court-awarded credit. Probation is a court sentence served in the community. Parole and mandatory supervision follow TDCJ custody, so they are not routine county-jail labels.
| Exit type | Meaning | Best next record |
|---|---|---|
| Surety or personal bond | Conditional release while the case continues | Jail release field and bond order |
| Time served or sentence complete | Custody ends under the judgment or credit | Booking-out sheet and judgment |
| Dismissal with release authority | The case action permits release after processing | Signed dismissal and jail exit time |
| TDCJ or other transfer | County custody ends, but confinement continues | Receiving-agency record |
| Parole or mandatory supervision | A state prisoner leaves TDCJ under supervision | TDCJ status and Parole Division record |
The Matagorda County standing bond order adds a local detail: sureties must be licensed locally and bonds must meet state and county form rules. A bond-out therefore shows conditional release, not sentence discharge.
Matagorda Bond Release Is Conditional
Matagorda County has a Bail Bond Board and a standing order for surety, personal, and attorney bonds. A surety must be licensed by the local board, and the bond must meet the governing state and county form rules. Once the jail accepts the authority and clears other holds, bond can permit a person to leave while the case remains pending.
Bond-out is not a sentence discharge. Later settings and conditions remain in Judicial Records. Confirm the event through the jail release field and the bond order. If the booking-out record instead names a receiving agency, the exit was a transfer rather than conditional community release.
Matagorda County Release Record Fields
A county release record is usually part of the booking or incarceration file, not a separate certificate. Exact portal fields remain unverified because the county-linked Tyler service blocked automated inspection. A written request can name the fields needed without assuming that each appears online.
| Field | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| Name and identifiers | Links the record to the right person |
| Booking or SO number | Ties the release to one custody episode |
| Booking date and charges | Shows the start and legal context |
| Bond and holds | Explains conditions or another agency's claim |
| Release date and time | Records when county processing ended |
| Release reason or disposition | Distinguishes bond, time served, court release, or transfer |
| Authority or order | Points to the legal basis |
| Destination or receiving agency | Shows whether custody continued elsewhere |
A property receipt may separately show when belongings were inventoried and returned. A booking photo may be attached to the booking, but Matagorda's live photo display was not confirmed. The safest conclusion comes from matching the release time and reason with the signed court action.
Request Matagorda County Release Records
When the web search does not return an older booking, use the county's Public Information Act process. The request must be in writing, though the county form is optional. Ask for an existing booking-in/out sheet or incarceration record rather than asking the office to answer a broad question.
- Identify the person with full name, aliases, birth date if known, and an approximate booking range.
- Add the SO or booking number and arresting agency when available.
- Request the release date and time, release type, authority, holds, destination, property receipt, and booking photograph needed.
- Email mcpir@co.matagorda.tx.us, use the online process, or send the request to the County Attorney's PIA office.
- Ask for electronic copies and an itemized estimate before costs are incurred.

Government Code Section 552.2615 provides an itemized-estimate process when expected charges reach $40. Do not send duplicate requests, and request court records from the proper clerk instead of the centralized PIA office.
Matagorda Release Record Retention
Texas Local Schedule PS sets minimum retention periods for local public-safety records. Prisoner incarceration materials, including booking-in/out forms and release orders, generally remain for at least two years after release or transfer. Property inventories and receipts have the same minimum. Certain transfer records have a one-year minimum after transfer. These periods govern agency retention, not how long a record stays visible on the Tyler site.
An empty web result does not show that a Matagorda County release record never existed. Ask the custodian for the retained record.
The Texas Public Information Act governs access, subject to legal exceptions. Juvenile, sealed, and expunged information may be withheld. Texas moved expunction law into Code of Criminal Procedure Chapter 55A in 2025. Release, dismissal, and expunction are different events, and only a qualifying final order changes the normal handling of covered records.
Matagorda Release and Expunction Differ
Texas reorganized expunction law into Code of Criminal Procedure Chapter 55A effective January 1, 2025. Older Chapter 55 summaries may therefore use obsolete numbering. A person does not gain expunction solely because the jail released them, a charge was dismissed, or a web record disappeared.
Eligibility depends on the current law and the case facts. A final expunction order can affect access and retention of covered records. Until such an order applies, use the jail and court custodians and preserve the distinction between release, dismissal, sealing, and expunction.
When a Matagorda release record appears to conflict with a later order, identify the exact booking and cause number before contacting the custodian. The jail cannot decide whether a person qualifies for expunction, and a public search result cannot override the court's signed order. Current Chapter 55A text and the case file are the sound sources for the legal status.
Find a Released Matagorda Inmate
Start with the system that last held the person. County, state, federal, and immigration databases do not substitute for one another. This order reduces false matches and makes transfers easier to recognize.
- Open the Matagorda County Public Records gateway and choose Jail Records. Match the person and booking if a historical result appears.
- Check Judicial Records by name and case number. Use the District Clerk for felony cases, the County Clerk for county misdemeanors, and the proper municipal court for citations.
- If the record shows a state commitment, search TDCJ by name and identifiers. Review status, location, incarceration history, and release fields.
- Use IVSS-Counties as a notice and corroboration source after confirming Matagorda participates. It is not an official release archive.
- For a federal matter, use the BOP locator and docket. Use the ICE locator only to test current immigration detention.
- If no online source settles the matter, call the jail and request the booking-out record in writing.
A released person normally leaves the active jail roster. Roster absence alone cannot distinguish community release from transfer.
The county's split between Jail Records and Judicial Records reflects the needed proof. The jail record establishes the physical exit. The signed order explains its legal authority. The Judicial Records portal can supply the case path, but a judgment time is not necessarily the moment the jail finished processing.
TDCJ Matagorda Release Search
The TDCJ online inmate search covers state prisons, state jails, and related TDCJ history. TDCJ has no jurisdiction over county jails. Someone who bonded out of Matagorda County Jail and never entered state custody may have no TDCJ record.
| Search item | Use |
|---|---|
| Full name | Starts a broad match |
| TDCJ number | Identifies a state correctional record |
| SID | Helps separate similar names |
| Date of birth | Confirms identity when allowed by the form |
| Status and location | Shows the current TDCJ context |
| Projected or scheduled date | Shows a changeable pre-release calculation, not proof of exit |
Open Offender Information Details and record the labels exactly. After approval, a scheduled release date and location can appear, but both may change during certificate audit. For a no-charge fallback, follow TDCJ's offender-information email instructions and supply the full name with a TDCJ number or sufficient birth and conviction details. Ask for current status, incarceration history, actual release or discharge date, and supervision status.
Matagorda County Recent Releases
Matagorda County publishes one county-linked Tyler Jail Records route. Research found no separately labeled official 24-hour, 72-hour, or recent-release feed. The portal's access controls also prevented reliable inspection of its filters, update pace, photo display, and historical reach. A current roster must not be relabeled as a release list.
For a recent event, use the portal in a normal browser, call Matagorda County Jail at 979-241-3275, and request a named booking's release or transfer status. A written request should state the exact calendar date and time zone. For a wider period, give a three-day range. The Released Last 24 Hours page explains that same-day fallback without claiming that a feed exists.
Matagorda Post-Release Supervision
Parole follows release from TDCJ and is supervised by the TDCJ Parole Division. Probation, called community supervision in Texas, is imposed by a court and managed locally by Matagorda County CSCD. Neither status can be assumed merely because someone left the jail roster.
- Parole
- Conditional community release from a state sentence.
- Probation
- A court sentence served under local community-supervision rules.
- Discharge
- The formal end of a sentence or supervision term.
- Absconder
- A supervised person alleged to have stopped reporting or left required contact.
State parole status starts with the TDCJ offender search or separate TDCJ IVSS. Matagorda maps to the Angleton District Parole Office. Probation is verified through the underlying court case because the local CSCD publishes no person-name lookup. The Matagorda parole and probation record page separates both offices and verification paths.
Matagorda Release Alerts and Transfers
Texas replaced the county VINE/VINELink interface with IVSS-Counties in September 2025. It can provide booking, release, court, escape, death, and transfer notices for participating entities. Confirm Matagorda participation in the live portal or through support before relying on it. The service warns that people no longer in custody may disappear, so a missing result is not proof of release.
A federal case belongs in the BOP Inmate Locator, which covers federal inmates from 1982 forward. “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” only means BOP custody ended. Another jurisdiction or supervision may remain. If immigration custody is possible, the ICE locator tests current detention but is not a historical release archive. Follow uncertain results with the federal docket, BOP FOIA, ICE contact, or ICE FOIA.
The official BOP result format can help distinguish a federal record from a county booking. The federal locator source is shown below.
The displayed fields support a federal custody check, but they do not replace a Matagorda County jail release record.
Matagorda Release Sources Compared
Each source proves a limited fact. Match the source to the custody path before drawing a conclusion.
| Source | Best use | Key limit |
|---|---|---|
| County jail roster | Current Matagorda custody | Absence does not prove release |
| Booking-out record | Actual county exit time and reason | May require a written request |
| Court file | Legal authority, judgment, bond, or dismissal | Does not prove processing time |
| TDCJ search | State custody and discharge fields | Does not cover county-only custody |
| IVSS | Alerts and corroboration | Not the official record |
| BOP or ICE locator | Federal or current immigration custody | Does not settle every other jurisdiction |
Matagorda County Release Facility
Matagorda County Jail is the only certified adult county detention facility found within the county. It holds people awaiting bond, trial, transfer, or other court action, as well as eligible county sentences. Community releases leave through the jail's booking-out process. State, federal, other-county, and immigration transfers must be traced in the receiving system.
No TDCJ prison, BOP institution, or dedicated ICE detention center was found physically within Matagorda County. That does not rule out transfer to those systems. Bay City and Palacios police are arresting agencies, not confirmed separate long-term jails, so they do not receive invented release databases or facility pages.
Matagorda Release Identity Documents
Texas DPS lists a TDCJ inmate ID, a TDCJ parole or mandatory-release certificate, a federal inmate ID, and a federal parole or release certificate as possible supporting identity documents. They may help after a Matagorda County release, but they are not always enough by themselves. Normal proof of identity, Texas residency, lawful presence, and Social Security requirements still apply.
Use the Texas identification requirements to check the full list before visiting an office. A jail release paper and a state discharge certificate serve different roles, so keep the document that matches the custody system.
Matagorda Court and Release Proof
Matagorda's portal separates Jail Records from Judicial Records. That split is useful rather than redundant. A signed bond order, dismissal, sentence, or judgment explains why release was authorized. The jail booking-out entry establishes whether and when the physical exit occurred, or whether another agency took custody.
Felony records generally belong with the District Clerk. County criminal and misdemeanor files generally belong with the County Clerk. Municipal citations remain with the proper city court. Always follow the cause number and court shown in the file. A court order can precede jail processing, and another hold can delay or redirect the exit.
Matagorda Records After Roster Removal
A roster entry can vanish while the underlying record remains in county custody. Texas retention rules require core incarceration, release, and property materials to remain for a minimum period after release or transfer. That makes a narrow PIA request the strongest fallback when the public portal shows nothing.
Bay City Municipal Court also publishes a time-served motion route for certain citation matters. That filing may explain a local disposition, but it does not establish the exact moment Matagorda County Jail opened the door or transferred the person. Pair it with the booking-out record.
Note: Online visibility and legal retention are different, so preserve the booking number and date range before requesting an older Matagorda release.
